you. jon: we still have debt deadlock on capitol hill with the default deadline just eight days away now. congressional leaders are still struggling to hammer out some kind of a deal, one that would raise the limit on our nation's credit card while cutting trillions of dollars in spending. house speaker john boehner may unveil his own bill today. harry reid said it would be a nonstarter. wendell goler is live on the north lawn with more. >> reporter: speaker boehner's plan would take the spending cuts agreed to before talks with vice joe biden broke down and raise the debt ceiling a little less than that. it would satisfy the speakers bottom line which is cutting spending more than the debt ceiling is raids but we'd have to go through this all over again by the end of the year. the speaker said yesterday it would solve the immediate crisis. >> there is going to be a two-stage process. it's not physically possible to do all of this in one step. having said that, chris, i know the president is worried about his next election, but my god shouldn't we be worried about the country? >> rep

security check riding on the outcome. abc's jon karl joins us now, from washington, with the latest. what about it? how close are we finally to a deal? >> reporter: getting close to a deal with the house speaker, john boehner. the outlines of this deal include up to $3 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years including some cuts to popular entitlement programs like medicare and social security. also, elizabeth, it would include a promise or a commitment that congress would bring more money in through tax revenues by reforming the code, closing some of those loopholes. that's something that congress would act on over this last year. >> that last one, isn't that disguise? a tax increase in >> reporter: well, certainly some will call it that. the rates won't go up. congress would have to act over the next year. if they didn't ago, automatic steps would be taken that both sides wouldn't like which would be tax hikes and spending cuts. possibly, elizabeth, they're talking about repealing part of the health care bill. >> even if president obama and speaker boehner reach a deal they hav
following overnight but democrats and republicans seem no closer to a deal. abc's jon karl is covering it from capitol hill. we are seeing fire from the house speaker. >> reporter: we sure are. this vote today on his debt ceiling plan is the highest-stakes vote of his term as speaker of the house, and he is doing everything he can to get those tea partyers in line. john boehner is now demanding republicans stand with their party. in a closed door meeting he had a stern message for tea partyers who just don't like his debt ceiling plan. boehner told them get your ass in line. sources at the meeting tell abc news, a day after another republican leader attempted to rally the troops with a clip from the movie "the town." >> i need your help. i can't tell you what it is. you can never ask me about it later and we're going to hurt some people. >> which car are we going to ta take? >> reporter: allen west liked what he heard. >> i told him i would drive the car. >> they could have used "rudy," "hoosiers," "band of brothers" but this is the movie they decided on. >> reporter: maybe they can us

. i want to bring in our capitol hill correspondent jon karl right now. we'll hear from speaker boehner in just a minute and the speaker has already made it clear he can't sign on to the president's grand compromise that would include some tax revenue increases, but now what he is nonowilling to do, the p plan h called for today, is extend th debt limit beyond about six months. >> reporter: that's right, and this comes, george, as the speaker is increasingly confident that he has the votes to pass his plan in the house and, in fact, they believe that will put pressure on the senate to bring it up, so you are right now at a point where the republicans feel maybe for the first time in a while on this that they haha the upper hand here, that they can get through the plan, their r version of th plan, and it would require the president to come back for another debt ceiling early next year. >> the president clearly hoping that by going to the public he'll be able to put pressure on those rubs, but is there a chance it could backfire and unify those house republicans? >> reporter: you'

and social security in return for republicans accepting major changes in the tax code. abc's jon karl joins us from washington. all talks secret up until now. what more do we know about what president obama and the speaker of the house have been discussing? >> reporter: we know they're talking about a big deal here, george. as you mentioned, this would mean that the president would go along with reductions in spending to social security and medicare. most likely cost of living increases going down. and in exchange, republicans would accept some increase in tax revenues as part of an overhaul of the tax code. as one top administration told me, we need to do something unthinkable on entitlements. they need to do something unthinkable on taxes. >> unthinkable may be the word. these talks have been going on between the president and speaker boehner. but there hasn't been a lot of discussion among the wider conferences in the house and the senate democrats and republicans. and i guess the big question coming out of today's meeting, when other leaders find out about it, is it something they can w
and there is still no agreement on what to do. sounds like a broken record. >> absolutely. as abc's jon karl reports it's not just democrats versus republicans, it's republicans versus republicans. >> reporter: john boehner is cracking the whip. he convened a meeting of all 240 house republicans today. sources who were there tell abc he had a blunt message for tea partyers. get your ass in line, he said, i can't do this job unless you are behind me. >> get you guys in line? >> we are a team, we are about trying to move the country forward. >> reporter: the tough talk does appear to be working. but it's not an easy sell. some of the tea partyers still just don't believe those dire warnings about government default. >> armageddon happens at midnight, august 3, is not the case, it is not true. >> reporter: kevin mccarthy, the third ranking republican in the house, urged republicans to unite behind boehner's plan by showing this clip from "the town." >> i need your help. i can't tell you what it is, you can never ask me about it later, we're going to hurt some people. >> which car we going to take? >> r
